For dermatologists, choosing the best electronic medical record (EMR) software system is essential in order to provide quality, uninterrupted patient care and to give staff members the tools they really need in order to succeed. First, dermatology specialists should ensure that the software vendor they are working with has prior experience with developing specialty-specific systems that meet the unique needs of a dermatology clinic’s physicians and patients. Not only will this improve the quality of care that patients receive from doctors and staff members at the clinic, but specialty-specific EMR software can also help to improve and streamline the way patients are handled in all parts of the facility. Unexpected added benefits also include a reduction in superfluous expenses and fewer mistakes by support staff and physicians, which can also boost overall efficiency and give medical staff the time they need to administer top-notch patient care.

To start the process of developing an EMR software system for a dermatology specialty facility, high-quality software vendors will typically first explore forms and/or templates the facility already uses every day. They will then propose ways to incorporate these in the new EMR software system. In addition, many vendors will also be able to suggest a variety of commonly used features for dermatology specialists and their patients. These already exist and can be very helpful, but be sure to look through the many options that are available before making a final decision. Popular features for dermatology EMR software include before and after reports, inventory management, E&M Coding assistance for dermatologists, optional cash-only billing, a dermatology-specific graphic database and internal medicine decision support, among many others. Taking the time to evaluate the existing options will help to ensure that the implementation process goes smoothly and improve your chances of being satisfied with the final product.

It is equally important for the dermatology-specific EMR software system you choose to be programmed to automatically recognize and use the terminology and vocabulary that is unique to this type of specialty practice. As with other features, a variety of templates for dermatology-specific EMR software systems already exist and can be adjusted to suit the exact needs of your practice. These include templates for varicose veins, cold sores, psoriasis, tummy tucks and acne visits – among many others. In fact, even the scheduling system can be fully adapted to suit the needs of a dermatology specialty clinic! The sky really is the limit when it comes to the ways in which these systems can work with your practice, so be sure to choose one that will help you and your staff best connect with patients while increasing productivity – a win-win for everyone.

When choosing a suitable electronic medical record (EMR) software system, pain management specialists should first ensure that the software vendor can develop a specialty-specific system that meets the unique needs of the facility’s physicians and patients. Not only will this improve the quality of care that patients receive from doctors at the clinic, but specialty-specific EMR software can also help to greatly refine and augment the way patients are managed at every point of contact with the facility and its staff. This reduces superfluous expenses and the chance of error, while also improving efficiency and freeing up valuable time for patient care.

When developing an EMR software system for a pain management specialty clinic, reputable software vendors should take the time to discover what forms and templates the clinic uses. In addition, a variety of commonly used templates for pain management specialists and their patients already exist, so be sure to take a look at what is available. Chances are good that you will discover several existing software features that will revolutionize your existing systems. For example, popular features for pain management EMR software include operating room vitals monitoring integration, patient education, a comprehensive clinical database, and interactive diagrams that can document the location of pain on different parts of the body, among many others. Taking the time to look at all of the options will ensure that the final product is exactly what your clinic needs.

It is also important for the EMR software system to automatically recognize and use the terminology and vocabulary that are unique to a pain management specialty practice. In addition, a variety of templates for pain management systems already exist and these can be adjusted to suit the exact needs of your practice. These include templates for back and neck pain, selective nerve blocks, multiple procedures, and lumbar punctures – to name only a few! Even the billing and scheduling systems can be fully customized to expressly accommodate the needs of a pain management specialty clinic. It’s details like these that make all the difference in the quality of care patients receive… and in the minutes (and dollars) that are saved!

As an OB/GYN specialty physician, it is imperative that the electronic medical record (EMR) software system you select has been developed specifically with your specialty – and the needs of your patients – in mind. In fact, choosing a specialty-specific software system that is pointedly designed with your clinic’s unique needs as the number one concern will not only improve the workflow for all of the medical professionals who are employed at the facility, but it can also help reduce expenses and eliminate errors.

In most cases the EMR software system you choose should be at least somewhat customized to fit the needs of your facility, but there are also several more general features that are fairly common for all OB/GYN EMR software systems. For example, a number of convenient, specialty-specific templates exist that are fully customizable, and the system should also automatically adopt the terminology and vocabulary words that are unique to the OB/GYN specialty physician. Other common features include OB/GYN-specific ultrasound integration, health maintenance reminders and measurements for functional levels.

Available templates often include (but are not limited to) pregnancy test templates, referral letter templates, initial gynecology visit templates, sexual dysfunction templates – and many more! These are mainly designed to assist gynecologists with the basic tasks of recording essential past and present patient information, including the history of present illness, medication, complaints, etc. In addition, be sure that the billing system and E&M Coder has been tailored to fit your needs as an OB/GYN specialty physician, as this will ensure increased accuracy and efficiency after implementation.

All of these precautions and the extra time it will take to find the right EMR software system for your OB/GYM specialty practice will also help to improve the level of patient care that your facility is able to provide. For example, by increasing access to the complete medical histories of all patients, physicians are better able to diagnose and prevent illness. In addition, this improved access allows doctors to more easily and quickly be able to take a few minutes and ‘get to know’ patients prior to appointments, which dramatically enhances the patient-physician relationship.

When it comes to electronic medical record (EMR) software, the choices can seem virtually endless, especially with respect to specialty software products – for e.g. those systems that are made specifically for ophthalmologists. Specialty EMR software products like this often include many of the standard EMR software features, such as billing and scheduling capabilities, decision support, treatment plans, document management, electronic faxing, e-prescribing and an online patient portal, but they will also include software that is designed to meet the specific needs of ophthalmologists.

Reputable EMR software vendors will often work with doctors and medical facilities to customize the specialty software, ensuring that it is capable of adapting to meet both current and future needs. For example, custom templates can be created specifically for managing patient care in an ophthalmology clinic, including medical history and complaints, as well as note-taking templates and billing systems that are fully customized for an ophthalmologist, to name only a few!

Working with a reputable vendor who can provide access to initial templates that have been designed specifically for use in an ophthalmology practice will not only speed up the implementation of the electronic medical record software system, but will also increase the overall satisfaction rate among end users. Available templates for ophthalmologists can include options tailored to retinal surgery, a variety of laser procedures and laser retinopathy, among many others, so be sure to do your research and know what is available before choosing an EMR software system.

Although many ophthalmologists still express a level of anxiety when beginning the process of EMR software implementation, it is important to keep things in perspective. Remember that the field of ophthalmology already requires doctors and other medical professionals to use a variety of advanced computer technology. The fact is that most ophthalmologists will find EMRs much easier to use than other programs they have already mastered!

It would be difficult to avoid recognizing that much of our society has become quite dependent on computer technology in order to function smoothly. In fact, many of us would agree that these advances have benefited humankind tremendously. Similarly, doctors and hospitals that have already decided to implement EMRs are quickly realizing the many benefits they provide. This is definitely the wave of the future, so start learning how electronic medical record software can help your practice save time and money today!

A variety of funding assistance options now exist for doctors and hospitals that have decided to implement a new electronic medical record (EMR) software system. In fact, the federal government has allocated $34 billion in stimulus money (estimated to provide $44,000 per physician over five years) to encourage medical facilities to adopt EMRs, while some states have also introduced their own incentive programs. The goal is to eventually allow medical professionals in every state to be able to access and exchange important patient medical information on a national system, but the first step is to implement EMRs in all facilities.

States like Kentucky and Louisiana have already created statewide initiatives to encourage the adoption of EMRs in an attempt to ensure that the state’s doctors and hospitals receive their portion of the stimulus funding, which will be given to states that implement widespread adoption by 2014. In order to receive funding, state offices are required by the federal government to oversee the implementation of EMRs among organizations that are involved in sharing patient health data.

The term ‘meaningful use’ is perhaps one of the most important issues surrounding federal reimbursement for EMR adoption, so it is crucial for doctors and hospitals to determine whether or not the EMR software systems they are considering will meet the requirements set forth by the Health IT Policy Committee. As a rule of thumb, start by making sure the system is tested and certified by the Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology (CCHIT), which is federally supported by the stimulus law.

Medicaid and Medicare are also providing incentives for EMR adoption in the form of bonuses between $44,000 and $63,750. In addition, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act calls for cuts in Medicaid reimbursements for doctors and hospitals that refuse to adopt an electronic medical record system. Many experts agree that these Medicaid penalties may do more to encourage EMR adoption by 2015 than many other incentives.

Regardless of the challenges that still surround the implementation of digital recordkeeping systems in medical facilities, EMRs are a necessary step to improve the quality of patient care. In addition, data will become available for study that has never been accessible before, which will allow doctors and other researchers to analyze patient information in new ways and, ultimately, will positively impact medical research and the entire future of medical care.

It is essential for all Americans, but particularly for medical professionals, to understand how the bill will affect health coverage and spending over the next ten years, especially with the current nationwide push to encourage more doctors and hospitals to adopt certified electronic medical record (EMR) software systems.

The projected cost of the bill over the next ten years is estimated to approach $940 million dollars, but the flip side is that it would also reduce the deficit by $143 billion dollars during the same time period, and that number is expected to jump to $1.2 trillion dollars over the subsequent ten years! In addition, the healthcare reform bill would expand coverage to include nearly 30 million Americans who are currently uninsured, mainly via state-based insurance exchanges that will be established by January 1, 2015. Although it may be too early to decide, it seems likely that EMR adoption will increase as these exchanges are established, as they will most likely require quick, easy access to pertinent patient medical information.

To pay for the new plan, the Medicare Payroll Tax will be expanded in 2012 to include unearned income, amounting to a 3.8 percent tax on investment income for families making more than $250,000 per year, or $200,000 for individuals. In addition, insurance companies will be required to pay a 40 percent excise tax on high-end insurance plans starting in 2018 and a 10 percent excise tax will be added to indoor tanning services in 2011.

Some clear benefits of the plan include improvements to Medicare prescription drug payment plans and significant discounts on medication costs for seniors, as well as coverage for children and protection for those with pre-existing conditions. Considering that Medicare and Medicaid are currently offering bonuses of up to $63,750 to help doctors and hospitals who choose to adopt Certified EMR software systems, it seems likely that the use of electronic medical records will experience additional growth thanks to the 2010 healthcare reform bill.

After the recent release of Apple’s iPad tablet, a number of healthcare IT professionals, as well as physicians, nurses and medical students, were asked to describe what features they would like the ideal healthcare tablet to possess. As it turns out, the iPad only comes with a handful of the “must-have” components they are looking for, and it is missing some of the main features they deemed most important. Although the iPad might not be the choice for doctors and hospitals, tablet makers will be thrilled to learn that many healthcare professionals have stated they do plan to purchase and begin using a tablet this year!

In fact, many workers have said they would like to use a tablet for everything from notes and memos to medical image viewing, and from clinical decision support to e-prescribing – to name only a few! Ease of use is often the most important factor when choosing a tablet. With many physicians who regularly see 30 patients in an eight-hour day, it’s essential to be able to quickly, easily and completely document each visit. Touch screen tablets are a huge favorite, due to the accuracy of entering information this way and the high level of usability they provide. A big problem with Apple’s iPad is that most EMR software systems are not compatible with a Mac OSX operating system, and instead require a Windows-based operating system in order to function.

Some other important factors healthcare professionals often consider when choosing a tablet include: Wi-fi accessibility, resistance to dust and liquid, portability, software selection, barcode scanning capability, fingerprint access and voice-to-text dictation. The iPad does not have sealed ports and is therefore vulnerable to spills and hospital fluids, as well as dust, making it very difficult to disinfect. In addition, the iPad does not offer fingerprint access, barcode scanning or an integrated camera for documenting diagnosis. All of these issues make it very unlikely that the healthcare industry will effect widespread adoption of the iPad, although it is clear that most healthcare workers are very excited about the idea of using a tablet – we can expect to see them pop up more and more in doctor’s offices and hospitals in the coming months!

Many experts agree that the use of smartphones among medical professionals is expected to increase substantially over the next ten years, although the use of handhelds by doctors is not a completely new phenomenon. Today, however, devices like the Apple iPhone, the Google Android, the RIM Blackberry and others are steadily becoming more effective and efficient at providing physicians online access to EMR software and other patient management tools.

By offering instant access to prescription information, medical histories and drug references, to name only a few of the many things smartphone applications are capable of providing, medical facilities are able to improve the quality of care patients receive. In addition, smartphone access to EMRs allows medical professionals to make much more efficient use of their time, as well as to enjoy anytime access to pertinent information (as long as a wireless Internet or 3G connection is available).

When considering the use of smartphones in any clinical setting, it is imperative the doctor or hospital takes the time to properly evaluate the EMR software vendor they choose. Although many providers are now beginning to offer applications that work with smartphones, clinics need to examine the amount of actionable information that will ultimately be provided. Since most medical professionals are already inundated with data, actionable information like patient alarms, progress reports and task lists are an invaluable resource. In addition, be sure to determine how well the smartphone software will integrate with your other systems of your facility.

One important factor that is helping to encourage the adoption of smartphone use in medical facilities is the simple fact that many doctors already have one for personal use. Therefore, the next natural step is to integrate handheld technology with EMR software in a clinical setting. For medical professionals who are already familiar with the benefits of texting and instant access to information via the Internet, for example, it is easy to imagine how this kind of technology could benefit a medical practice. Issues of cost and the realities of implementation are still working to hinder the full-scale, widespread adoption of smartphones and EMRs that most experts agree is coming. But the facilities that do decide to move ahead with adoption of these technologies sooner rather than later will most likely find themselves ahead of the curve.

When a medical facility has decided to adopt a new EMR software system, there are several important points to consider. Price, certification and usability are all critical factors, as is compatibility with any existing systems. By doing a bit of research prior to implementation, doctors and hospitals can ensure maximum effectiveness and high levels of staff and patient satisfaction with the transition.

Perhaps most important, before you choose a specific EMR software package be sure to discover whether or not it’s certified by the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology (CCHIT). Although the development of the exact criteria for federal certification guidelines is still ongoing, the Health IT Advisory Committee has announced, in conjunction with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), that they plan to “grandfather in” software provided by vendors that have obtained CCHIT certification. This is important because Medicaid and Medicare are offering incentives for physicians and healthcare facilities that adopt eligible, certified digital recordkeeping systems.

It is also critical for EMR software systems to meet the unique needs of different doctors and hospitals. Practices that take the time to fully understand their current demands, but also try to anticipate potential future requirements, will ultimately experience a much higher success and satisfaction rate than facilities that act only on cost or other factors. A wide variety of features are available, including the collection of specific data regarding the staff to physician ratio, the average number of phone calls received daily, patient vital signs, drug allergies and prescriptions, to name only a few.

Of course, cost remains a major factor for many doctors and healthcare facilities that are considering the adoption of an EMR software system. In order to determine the best system for your budget, be sure to perform a cost-benefit analysis. Devoting the time to research this up front will prevent costly mistakes and help to ensure that you end up with a product that fulfills all of the facility’s current needs and can be scaled to meet future requirements as well. Also, be sure to look into government assistance programs that are available to help finance the adoption of new EMR software systems. Ultimately, the time and money that is saved will make it worth every minute you invest upfront.
